Underglaze Basics and Techniques

The class will be on use of underglaze and basic techniques This 3 hour class will focus on how to use underglaze, when it’s applied to a leather hard slab plate. We will teach you how to mix colors and apply the underglaze. We will also go over some techniques to add depth and detail to your painted design.

Techniques taught:
Mishima – when the color is filled into grooves carved into the clay.
Sgraffito – scratching away the top layer of underglaze to reveal the clay underneath.

Our staff will have a few designs to choose from. We ask that one of our supplied designs be used so that we can be sure your piece will be completed successfully, within the scheduled class time. Some prior experience with clay and painting is helpful but not necessary.

You will leave your completed plate with us at the end of the class. Our staff will watch over your plate as it dries and then bisque fire, clear glaze and glaze fire your piece. Once your completed artwork is available to be picked up will contact you via text with the phone number you provided to us when registering (about 4-6 weeks.)

What to bring: All project materials will be provided. Wear old clothes that you don’t mind getting messy. Shorter fingernails are less likely to damage your design during the painting process.

Please be open minded that we have a successful rate of finished pots
but things happen and its about the process.

This workshops is open to only 8 participants.   Ages 21 and up
